Knowing Your SSM (Size, Style, Material) When Choosing an Outdoor Rug
Mark & DayDecorating your outdoor spaces is always a pleasure because it allows you to be less formal and more flexible when compared to indoors. Your outdoor porch or patio is your breath of fresh air both physically and mentally.
Especially at a time of a pandemic, where we are bound to our homes more than ever, our outdoor porches are inestimable. As similar as designing your indoors, (check out our post about How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Living Room for our indoor rug picking tips) decorating outdoors is also all about the kind of statement you are willing to make with your style.
Decide on the style which best describes your desires and march towards it! Do, however, keep in mind that there are a few more things you need to know about choosing outdoor rugs for deck or outdoor rugs for patios. Keep reading!
Size

Take your space’s overall size into great consideration when picking an outdoor rug. If your space is large, you should consider pieces that will cover most of it or at least most of your furniture rather than a small fraction only. Assign square rugs under square shaped dining tables as it exposes a fine display. For your furniture, however, you can opt for rectangular or square rugs to create a spacey look. There should be a 12-24 inches gap between your rug’s edges and the perimeter of your deck/patio area.
Style
Before picking the rug of your dreams, think of the way you use your outdoor space. The purpose of your patio/porch will serve your final decision. Is your outdoors mostly used for crowded gatherings, barbeque parties? Is it mostly filled by your kids, their gadgets, and a play area for them? Or are you aiming for a relaxing, quiet outdoors theme for your space? Each theme will respond to a style that will reflect it most appropriately. If you aim for a vibrant look, you should discuss playful designs.
If you are striking to create a calmer, less chaotic scene, then you should be aiming for more soft and plain patterns.
Material
If we are talking outdoors, we are talking dust, stains, and unexpected weather. As pleasurable as outdoor activities are, they are also naked to trouble. In this case, you should focus onto outdoor rugs that can get wet and are durable enough to last you at least for a significant amount of time.
Sunlight and moisture are key attackers of outdoor rugs so it would be wise to stay cautious on the matter. Sisal and bamboo rugs will be admirable choices, however, should be kept away from moist. If your space is somehow covered on top, you can freely go for a bamboo material rug.
Synthetic fiber rugs, which are polypropylene on the front and the back of the rug, are waterproof and thus, perfect for outdoors. Polypropylene is also easy to clean, making it even more desirable.

Another most used natural fiber is assuredly Polyester. With this material, you no longer have to worry about cookout burns or disasters because Polyester is flame resistant. It is also practical to clean due to its stain resistant feature.
