5 Things You Should NOT Do When Decorating Your Home

5 Things You Should NOT Do When Decorating Your Home

Mark & Day

From architecture to building plans, from the walls of your home to the rugs you pick and all the way to the mini tiny items sitting on the drawer, interior design is mostly personal, and everyone has a different taste which is why every home has its own unique personality. However, there are general architectural rules that if not followed, can make your artistic design tedious.

We think that a house’s interior design quality is based 50% on personal taste and 50% on general unwritten rules. Because it is immensely tough and cliché, rather than telling you ‘’what to do’’, we will give you advice on '’what NOT to do’’ on your road to new decor.

  • Do not mix styles improperly!

Applying diversity in furniture is brilliant only if done in moderation. One example for this is that there should be no distinct style differences between rooms. For instance, decorating one room in vintage pieces, and another room in a modernistic approach can lead to a complete mess. Avoid mistakes like these by picking pieces from the same class and circumstantially mixing styles without over doing it.

  • Don’t try to match irrelevant items!

Not every piece fits the way it should. Even though the general idea of fitting similar textured furniture together is prevalent, you shouldn't match things together just because you own them. Let's say you have decided to redecorate your living room. You possess a bohemian rug with light brown accents along with a chair with similar tones, but unlike the rug, the chairs style is modernistic! Although the colors of these pieces are alike, this does not mean they go well together. It will not fit in and will create a repugnant look due to style differences.

choosing the right color

  • Don’t rush into sorting your colors!

Colors are a broad range which sometimes make it very hard to pick from. Luckily, we all have personal tastes and favorites which helps us narrow down the options. This is actually why you should be careful when choosing colors for your home. A big mistake is made often when people go out and confirm their furniture colors on the first trip to the first store. This results in choices which are made based on emotional urges & final results generally tend to be disappointing. You can make good use of color samples as they are useful guiders for picking colors since taking these samples home and visualizing them with different combinations at home will help you make a healthier decision.

  • Don’t disregard lightning!

Even though we all know how much of a difference lighting can make in your room, mostly we tend to neglect this topic when choosing lighting elements for our homes. Instead of carelessly picking basic or classic lamps, go for chandeliers… retro or industrial inspired brilliances. Picks like these will shine brighter and can fill that unspoken hole in your decoration.

  • Don’t forget that rugs are the real deal!

We can't stress enough on this absolutely basic yet overlooked rule. Area rugs should not be small. This is the most common mistake people make when buying rugs. Your area rug in this case should lay below all legs of your furniture and if that’s not possible, at least the front legs of the bigger pieces must overlap with the rug. The worst thing you can do to your living room is to let your rug lay on the center naked and square. Apart from your solid large furniture pieces, all four legs of your smaller items should be coated on the rug.

Bonus tips worth your time!

  • Pictures and all types of wall hangings shouldn’t be scattered around the wall. This will create a chaotic view. Instead, grouping several matching pieces together brings balance and creative feelings into the room.

  • Furnitures need personal space too! Oppressing your naive furniture by reclining them to the walls is a common mistake. Grouping them spaciously will enhance the atmosphere.

  • Trends come and go just like everything else. Choosing pieces for your home that are perpetual is a better idea in the long term.
